Court Days
By Ray Carver 3 Penny Theatre Court Days, set in antebellum Virginia, tells the tale of a slave killing an overseer. But it’s not what you expect – the slave’s master turns Prince Henry county upside down by defending the slave instead of the overseer. This play looks at people’s faith in the status quo and having faith that you’re doing the right thing. Based on an actual Virginia court case from 1825 featured in the award winning history Israel on the Appomattox by William and Mary professor Melvin Patrick Ely. |

Souvenir
By Stephen Temperley Into the Woods Theatre Souvenir is a about the relationship between perhaps one of the worst opera singers on the continent. Florence Foster Jenkins and her flamboyant accompanist Cosme McMoon. Cosme takes on the job as pianist reluctantly and only for the money. Slowly, a deep friendship develops between them and Cosme finds himself protecting Florence against the cruel reality that the audience is laughing at her, not with her. Florence comes back as an angel and gets to sing the way she hears herself. This play is poignant and hilariously slapstick. |

Making God Laugh
By Sean Grennan River City Community Players Making God Laugh follows one typical family over the course of thirty years' worth of holidays. Starting in 1980, Ruthie and Bill's grown children - a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former football star - all return home, where we learn of their plans and dreams as they embark on their adult lives. The empty-nester parents contend with their own changes, too, as old family rituals are trotted out and ancient tensions flare up. As time passes, the family discovers that, despite what we may have in mind, we often arrive at unexpected destinations. Proverbs 16:9 - "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." Proverbs 19:21 - "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand." Or as Ruthie reads from Reader's Digest, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." |
